Cataract Surgery

INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS UNDERGOING CATARACT SURGERY

In Cataract surgery, opaque lens is removed by making small incision in the eye. After lens removal a plastic lens is implanted in the eye.

HOW IS CATARACT SURGERY IN CHILDREN DIFFERENT FROM ADULTS:

  • TIMING OF SURGERY– Earlier the Better. Later the surgery- poorer the outcome.
  • TISSUE HANDLING – Very delicate soft tissue, therefore requires special handling with specialized techniques.
  • POSTERIOR CAPSULE – An opening is needed in the posterior support of the lens in kids to avoid visual axis opacification unlike adults. In adults if this layer breaks, it is considered a complication. Therefore cataract surgery in children shoud be done in expert hands who are trained for such procedures.
  • LENS IMPLANTATION – May not be appropriate for children less than 1 -2 years of age- therefore they are left aphaikc and need glasses or contact lenses after the surgery.
  • SURGERY TIME– Surgery takes 45 minutes to 1 hour unlike adults, which is 10 – 15 minutes.
  • POSTOPERATIVE CARE– Children need a lot of care and lifetime follow up. Bandage is placed for 24 hours.
  • POST SURGERY GLASSES – Predictability of power and lens size is not standardized. Therefore even if you implant a lens in the eye – wearing spectacles is necessary.
  • SUCCESS RATE – Ranges from 95-99%.
  • RESURGERY– Some cases may require re-surgery.
