INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS UNDERGOING GLAUCOMA SURGERY
In a Glaucoma surgery in a child (Trabeculotomy and Trabeculectomy) a hole is made to allow excess accumulation of water inside the eye (aqueous) to flow out of the eye, after opening up the pipeline (Schlemm’s Canal) that blocks the drainage of the aqueous. This is accomplished by using specialized instruments called Harm’s Trabeculotome.
HOW IS GLAUCOMA SURGERY IN CHILDREN DIFFERENT FROM ADULTS
o TIMING OF SURGERY– Later surgey means poor vision.
o TISSUE HANDLING – The tissues in the eyes are very delicate hence require – special handling with special instruments and specialized techniques. The surgical procedure demands high level of skill and experience. Specialised instruments are required for assessment and management viz. Barkan’s Lens, Harm’s Trabeculotome and Perkin’s Tonometer
o SURGERY TIME– Surgery takes approx. 30 minutes.
o POSTOPERATIVE CARE– There would be a bandage after surgery for 24 hours. If the surgery is done under general anaesthesia, food restriction is there for 6 hours post surgery. The patient/child can resume all the activities from one week after the surgery.
o SUCCESS RATE – Ranges from 70-80%. Some patients need to continue the anti-glaucoma medications even after surgery. Regular follow up is needed.
