INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS UNDERGOING PTOSIS SURGERY
In patients with Ptosis, the eye muscle that lifts the eyelid is weak. In a Ptosis surgery this muscle is tightened or a special material called sling is passed to lift the lid. This is accomplished through a cut in the skin or holes, which are not visible later. These holes are made in the skin as shown in Figure 1. A sling surgery is performed with the special silicon material or patients own tissue harvested from the leg (called fascia lata).
o TIMING OF SURGERY– Children and adolescents may be especially sensitive to self-esteem problems because of ptosis, especially if schoolmates tease them. Therefore it is essential to operate as early as possible to avoid functional visual, psychological and learning problems. Ptosis repair on very young patients/ newborns may be necessary. Generally, it’s safest to wait until a child is at least 1 or 2 years of age to perform ptosis surgery. General anesthesia is safer at this age than in infancy. During this waiting period have your child’s eye checked every 3-6 months to avoid risk of amblyopia or any other problem.
o TISSUE HANDLING – Very delicate soft tissue, therefore requires special handling with specialized techniques.
o SURGERY TIME– Surgery takes approx. 45 minutes. If it is bilateral, it can be performed in the same sitting.
o POSTOPERATIVE CARE– If the surgery is done under general anaesthesia, food restriction is there for 6 hours post surgery. The patient/child can resume all the activities within one week after the surgery. A special frost suture may be placed on the lower lid and attached to the forehead using tape to avoid any exposure problems post surgery for a week. The patients eye would remain partly open during sleep atleast for 6 weeks.
o POST SURGERY GLASSES – If your child has glasses, he/ she will require glasses even after surgery, as the surgery is done only to correct lid problem and not for vision.
o SUCCESS RATE – Ranges from 80 -90%
o RESURGERY– Some cases may require re-surgery
